Learning Support

Academy

“The best educated human being is the one who understands the most about the life in which he is placed.”
Helen Keller

Objectives

At Mikro Primary, we aim to develop every learner to their full potential. Some learners occasionally require a little extra academic and emotional support. This is where our LSEN intervention programme (Learners with Special Educational Needs) becomes invaluable — helping learners regain their self-confidence and sense of self-worth through an academic support programme that addresses scholastic backlogs.

Approach

Learners with academic difficulties in Mathematics and Home Language are withdrawn from their regular classes in small groups during school hours. They are provided with the necessary skills to catch up and cope within the larger classroom setting, in line with their individual abilities.

This individual attention is vital for the quick assessment and evaluation of specific learning gaps. Support is then provided immediately, in consultation with the class teacher.

Support Services Offered at School

Laerskool Mikro’s support services consist of a multi-disciplinary team of skilled professionals who regularly visit the school. These include:

SBST (School-Based Support Team): Mr Mouton and support members
Social Worker: Mrs Leana Sutherlandd
LSEN Educators: Mrs Ansie Swanepoel (Grades R–3)
Mrs Alida Nell (Grades 4–7)

Occupational Therapy: (Private therapists)
Speech Therapy: (Private therapists)
Medical Doctor (WCED): Dr Lawrence
Psychologist (WCED): Mr Timothy Cornelissen
Inclusive Education (WCED)
Specialist therapists: Specialist therapists appointed by the Western Cape Education Department

This structure allows us to provide early, focused, and compassionate support, helping each child reach their potential — academically, emotionally, and socially.
